Belcan has an exciting opportunity at our Blantyre, Glasgow office for two Structural Design Engineer's to join our Marine and Defence team.

Day to day necessary tasks will include, providing liaison and solutions for customer structural problems for the lifting, rigging and jigs required for installation of equipment on board offshore vessels.

This role has a strong focus on engineering delivery and quality.

Amongst other things the successful candidate will be comfortable working in an Engineering Service environment and will be able to balance the technical responsibilities inherent within the role, with the commercial and project timescale associated with delivery.

Responsibilities and Capability:

  • Responsible for technical quality of personal output
  • Helps support other team members as directed by Team Leader/Management
  • Helps support Team Leader/Management with aspects such as capability development, QMS related quality issues etc.
  • Supports offshore tasks as directed by Team Leader

Customer:

  • Interacts with customer technical focal points as required
  • Be able to interact well with both internal and external stakeholders and communicate technical issues; propose solutions for features which do not meet the requirements etc.
  • Supporting team leader to define approach, timescales and hours associated with tasks
  • Interacts with customer technical focal points as required

Delivery:

  • On-Time, On-Budget delivery in accordance with customer quotations
  • Adherence to the Belcan QMS

P&L:

  • Identify cost savings (internal & customer)
  • Identify change
  • Manages change and can articulate its occurrence

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • Must be degree qualified. However other qualifications and experience will be considered.
  • Experience in Marine engineering and a defence related industry OR experience in a complex engineering domain such as Automotive, Aerospace, Transportation, Energy etc.
  • Must be proficient in the use of the appropriate tools and techniques that will be used by your team (e.g. Windchill, design modelling software and FEA software, etc…).
  • Must have an excellent knowledge of handling and lifting equipment in a marine environment.
  • Must have an excellent awareness of the interaction and impact of their designs in terms of lifting and handling equipment within and on client's vessels.
  • Must have an excellent knowledge of CLAME, Germanischer Lloyds, Def Stan and other appropriate marine codes.
  • Working knowledge of structural FEA techniques and software packages.
  • Highly proficient in structural hand calculations methods and techniques.
  • Must be a highly capable communicator both written and spoken.
  • Must be an excellent team player with a tenacious and resilient attitude to drive the interface with the customer and the various engineering and support functions of the business.
  • Provide technical support and troubleshooting responses in assigned areas to operational units or other activities.
  • Appreciates and can articulate the value of the engineering lifecycle and the relationship to the Lifecycle Management Process. Support and participate in technical reviews to ensure product viability.
  • Understand the importance of Health and Safety requirements and can articulate the need to ensure that the product is acceptably safe and that product and system safety assessments form part of the design process.
  • Must understand regulatory and statutory requirements of the product.
  • Must have an appreciation of the requirement that the environmental impact of our activities is sustainable in the long-term.
  • Appreciates the need for a supportability engineering process to sustain the long-term viability of the business. Understands that supportability goes beyond basic design, maintenance, and operability requirements.

Key Outputs/ Deliverables

  • Production of 3D integrated CAD models and associated production output drawings that deliver the engineering design intent
  • Produce, where required, engineering evidence to back detail design decisions in the form of technical reports, specifications, and studies
  • Clear evidence of personal tracking of own quality and cost performance
