Safety Engineer - (Process and Functional)

Job Type: Permanent - Hybrid role

About Us

Belcan's Energy and Utilities division (BAS) is a specialist engineering consultancy providing Control & Instrumentation Engineering, Process & Technical Safety Services, and OT Cyber Security consultancy services. We are a team of high calibre engineers and have a passion for combining engineering and innovation. BAS is part of Belcan, an international engineering firm founded over 60 years ago, serving customers in over 60 locations worldwide.

The Position

BAS are looking to recruit a Senior Consultant (Safety and Risk) to lead/assist on a variety of interesting and complex projects. This will involve occasional visits to UK based clients and Belcan's regional offices (hybrid working).

BAS mainly works as a consultant and design assurance partner in the Energy and Utility industries, and Belcan offers a wide range of services for the Manufacturing, Automotive, Aerospace, and Defence industries. BAS's Safety & Risk team can act both as design assurance consultants on behalf of the end users / operators, and as independent specialists / designers supporting major engineering contractors.

The role will involve working on multiple projects for our clients in the Energy and Utility sector, with special focus on leading the implementation of Functional Safety Lifecycle activities (in line with IEC 61511 and IEC 61508). Additional responsibilities would include performing various specialist Process / Technical Safety and Risk Analysis Studies which may be required to support the wider engineering projects or sought for as standalone consultancy studies. Appropriate training (on-job and external courses/certification) along with mentoring will be provided where needed. The position would be reporting directly to Head of Risk and Engineering, and is expected to integrate well with the wider BAS team.

We are looking for:

Skills & Experience

  • Accredited degree in a closely related Engineering subject - e.g., Chemical / Process, Control & Instrumentation, Safety and Reliability;
  • Relevant experience in an engineering and / or engineering consultancy environment;
  • Experience working in major hazard industries, preferably in Energy / Oil & Gas / Petrochemical / Process / Chemicals;
  • Strong experience in leading / performing various Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment Studies;
  • Demonstrable experience of implementing the Functional Safety Lifecycle (IEC 61511/IEC 61508) and performing / leading activities such as Hazard Identification, SIL Determination, Safety Requirement Specifications, SIL Verification, Proof Test Procedures (PTP), and Functional Safety Management & Planning;
  • Experience in Process and Technical Safety Studies (e.g., QRAs, FERA, EERA) would be highly desirable;
  • Ability to lead individual tasks/activities with minimal supervision and lead junior team members;
  • Experience in facilitating workshop type safety and risk studies would be highly desirable;
  • Comfortable with presenting technical information in front of clients/major stakeholders (internal/external);
  • Able to efficiently collaborate in a remote working environment (using MS Teams or similar).

Note: BAS have a hybrid working model;

  • Chartered Engineer or actively working towards chartership;
  • Awareness/Exposure in any of the following areas would be advantageous but not essential: Natural Gas, LNG, Hydrogen.

Personal

Attributes BAS are looking for are an interest in complex engineering projects, a desire to do the best possible job for the client within the confines of the project (i.e., some commercial and project management awareness), and proficiency with MS office (Word and Excel). We expect our consultants to be self-starters, engaging, and proactive. We value a can-do attitude as much as experience. You must be enthusiastic about the work you do and be able to deliver it to an excellent written and oral communication standard.
