Role Overview
A leading engineering organisation is seeking an experienced Principal Stress Engineer to support the structural analysis of advanced turbomachinery systems in Derby. This role will lead analysis activities from concept through to production, ensuring designs meet critical requirements around stress, vibration and component life.
You'll play a key role in shaping analysis methodologies, supporting design decisions, and collaborating with cross-functional engineering teams to deliver high-quality, compliant solutions.
Responsibilities - Principal Stress Engineer
- Lead the development of analysis plans and schedules for structural and design projects
- Collaborate with programme engineering teams and technical leads to meet project goals
- Deliver analysis outputs in line with project timelines and customer expectations
- Participate in technical reviews and cross-functional engineering discussions
- Produce and maintain structural analysis documentation throughout the project lifecycle
- Apply and support development of analysis methods, standards and best practices
- Act as a key point of contact for stress-related technical communications with stakeholders
- Present technical findings in internal and external design reviews
- Provide analytical calculations and support to wider design and engineering teams
- Ensure all structural analysis work is fully documented in design analysis reports
- Perform self-checks on all deliverables prior to peer or senior review
Requirements - Principal Stress Engineer
- Degree (or equivalent experience) in Aeronautical, Mechanical, or a related engineering discipline
- Proven experience in stress analysis within turbomachinery or combustion systems
- Strong understanding of structural analysis methods, procedures and industry standards
- Solid grounding in strength of materials and solid mechanics
- Hands-on experience with finite element analysis tools (e.g. ABAQUS, ANSYS, NASTRAN)
- Ability to troubleshoot and resolve FEA-related issues
- Knowledge of gas turbine component behaviour and failure modes
- Capable of balancing technical trade-offs and managing engineering risk
- Experience with CAD systems (NX preferred but not essential)
- Strong communication and organisational skills
- Ability to engage with stakeholders to define requirements and provide technical updates
- Eligibility to obtain UK Security Clearance is essential
