Position Description

Job Title: Body Engineer

Reporting to: Principal Engineer - Body and Structures

Location - Leeds

Industry - Automotive

Role: Body Engineer to work on all areas of vehicle interior and exterior bodywork including, exterior mouldings (GRP, ABS), exterior panels (aluminium), glazing, doors, interior mouldings (GRP, ABS), flooring, seat layouts, handrail layouts, driver's area, lighting (extrusions), ceilings, air ducting.

Body Engineer Job description (JD):

  • Liaise with internal departments on costs, materials, specification and assembly.
  • Interpret Sales orders and liaise with sales and customers on requirements and options.
  • Design interior ceiling systems with consideration for HVAC ducting and distribution.
  • Design doors and access panels for electrical and hardware access.
  • Package and mount electrical equipment where required.
  • Design sheet metal components/structures when required.
  • Design air inlet and cooling grilles for heating, ventilation and cooling packs.
  • Design saloon glazing and interior clear screens with consideration for screen printing and adhesives.
  • Design Aluminium pressings for panels.
  • Liaise with external suppliers on collaborative designs and design issues.
  • Produce detailed drawings for all components, assemblies and layouts.
  • Design Aluminium extrusions for lighting, seat rails and cant rails.
  • Design formed components with consideration for release angle and splits for GRP and ABS components.
  • Ability to interpret regulations.
  • Complete seating layouts taking into account legal requirements for seat pitch, gangways etc.
  • Complete handrails layouts taking into account legal requirements.
  • Present design ideas to others using CAD and Microsoft office
  • Deliver robust solutions through best practices such as DFMEA, DFA, DFM
  • Support testing and validation activities and validate that specifications and project targets are met through appropriate documentation.
  • Lead issue resolution of systems/subsystems level and/or technical problems at various testing, field deployment milestones. Should actively drive for root-cause-analysis and conclusion.
  • Support testing activity to meet certification requirements of components/vehicle.
  • Meet time, quality and cost constraints for the designs.

Candidate Profile:

Essential Qualifications:

Engineering Degree.

Desired Skills:

  • Experience of working with GRP and Vacuum formed ABS.
  • Experience of alternative composites beneficial.
  • Experience of Aluminium extrusions and tooling.
  • Knowledge of driver's cab layouts and ISO16121
  • Experience of using Catia/Solidworks and PDM
  • Experience of interpreting regulations, Reg 107, IVA
  • Surface modelling experience
  • Ability to perform vehicle laden weight calculations.
  • Some hands-on experience of building vehicles to understand potential Production build issues.
  • Attention to detail.
